the food owned by new York city

A city of immigrants, New York has many cuisines to which it can lay claim: New York pizza, dirty water hot dogs, andbacon, egg and cheese on a roll come to mind. But perhaps no cuisine is more associated with New York City, than Appetizing and Delicatessen. Nothing is more New York, than a bagel with lox and a schmear or a hot pastrami sandwich on rye.

Smoked fish and cured and smoked meats were an important part of the cultures of eastern European nations from Germany and Poland to Russia, Ukraine and beyond. During the immigration waves of the early 20th century, Jewish immigrants fled Europe and began to settle in New York City, and they are the ones that brought this wonderful cuisine with them. Just like they'd done in their respective countries of origin, they smoked and pickled fish, and they cured and smoked meats as great way for them to extend the life of what little, precious food they had.  In other words, this was peasant food. Appetizing shops and delicatessens, the separation of which was dictated by Jewish dietary laws, dotted the Lower East Side of Manhattan and virtually every neighborhood throughout Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx.

Unfortunately, over the course of decades the number of appetizing shops and delicatessens in New York dwindled, and in Brooklyn, all but disappeared.

Over the past decade, Brooklyn has undergone a renaissance of sorts. Some of New York’s most exciting food is in Brooklyn, and while always an amazingly special place, Brooklyn has become that place whose inhabitants, natives and transplants alike simply never want to leave!

From great restaurants to excellent cheese shops and other specialty food shops, Brooklyn is a foodie paradise. What has been missing though, is the appetizing shop and the delicatessen. Speaking to people around the brownstone Brooklyn, it became clear that like us, they were hankering for this food or yore, but they were sick of having to schlep to Manhattan to get it. So, we are excited to introduce Shelsky’s Of Brooklyn - Appetizing and Delicatessen, to Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.

Appetizing and Delicatessen all in one very tasty place!
